Meet Dakota: A Tail of Unconditional Love

Filled with Wiggles and Giggles
Every hero has a story, but Dakota’s is one of quiet, unconditional love. With soft eyes that radiate warmth, a unique wiggle that stands in for a wagging tail, and a calm, gentle presence, Dakota brings something truly extraordinary to every life he touches. He’s not just a therapy dog; he’s a source of solace for families navigating some of life’s most challenging moments.
Learn more about Dakota through his handler, Karen Larson-Bruns.
Please tell us about your therapy dog’s personality. What makes him special?
Dakota is the definition of sweet and squishy. He doesn’t have a tail, but that doesn’t stop him from showing how excited he is—with his soft eyes and his signature wiggle! He’s incredibly affectionate, calm, and loves making people feel better just by being next to him. There’s something truly special about the way he connects with everyone he meets.
What does a typical visit to George Mark Children’s House look like for Dakota?
As soon as we arrive, Dakota starts his signature happy wiggle. He knows exactly where we are and why we’re there. He makes his rounds, greeting the front office staff, then he stops at every open door down the hallway. And he always stops at Katie’s office for his morning cookies. If it’s a nice day we like to take the kids outside. We love walking the grounds looking at all the beautiful flowers and listening to the birds.
Dakota also enjoys curling up in bed with the kids while I read to them.
How do the children react when they meet Dakota for the first time?
Many are in awe of him. His unique coloring, soft coat, and that full-body wiggle get instant smiles. Some kids giggle right away, and others slowly reach out, drawn in by his gentle presence.
What does Dakota enjoy the most about visiting George Mark Children’s House?
The cuddles, the attention, and—let’s be honest—the treats. He loves laying his head in a child’s lap or curling up next to them. He seems to know when someone needs a little extra love and makes his way right over. His joy is contagious, and you can see how much he loves being part of these visits.
“Training him as a therapy dog wasn’t even a question—it was more like following what he was already meant to do.”
– Karena Larson-Bruns, Kaya’s Handler
How has Dakota made a difference for the children and their families?
Dakota brings calm into difficult moments. His presence helps anxious kids relax, lifts moods, and even encourages communication in kids who may otherwise be withdrawn.
While a patient’s family was staying at the house, their younger children loved spending time with Dakota. They enjoyed playing with him and giving him hugs. Dakota brings comfort that words often can’t.
What inspired you to train Dakota as a therapy dog?
I knew Dakota was meant to be a therapy dog when he was just a few months old. Even as a puppy, he was unusually calm, gentle, and so in tune with people’s emotions. He’d quietly cuddle up to anyone who seemed upset or anxious; it was like he just knew who needed love. I remember thinking, this dog is going to help a lot of people someday. Training him as a therapy dog wasn’t even a question—it was more like following what he was already meant to do.
