On a bright autumn evening, San Francisco’s renowned Fairmont Hotel was the backdrop for gratitude and hope as over 500 guests gathered to celebrate the 20th anniversary of George Mark Children’s House. This heartfelt event took place on October 25, 2024, a celebration of two decades devoted to providing essential care for children with critical illnesses and their families—a mission rooted in love and resilience.
The evening resonated with emotion and purpose as individuals whose lives were touched by the organization shared their journeys. Among the speakers was founder Dr. Kathy Hull, whose serene yet powerful presence inspired the room. Accompanying her was CEO Shekinah Eliassen, who spoke passionately about the unwavering generosity of the George Mark community. George Mark parent and acclaimed author Amie Lands also took center stage, sharing inspirational stories that spoke to the heart of George Mark’s impact.
“Today, we celebrate not just 20 years of care, but countless moments where compassion met courage. Our mission continues to hold the same importance today as it did when we first began, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to the families we serve.”

This commitment was echoed by CEO Shekinah Eliassen, who emphasized the organization’s values. “Every donation—every ounce of support—ensures we continue to deliver care without families bearing any financial burden,” she said. “This evening is proof of what happens when a community comes together to lift others.”
Betty Yu of KTVU guided the evening with grace and poise. Former patient Charlie Cleberg‘s mother, Kathy Cleberg, shared deeply personal reflections on her family’s experiences. Their words vividly depicted the compassion and unwavering support they found through George Mark Children’s House.
The gala was not just a retrospective but also a powerful call to action. Fundraising efforts throughout the evening highlighted the collective spirit and dedication to amplify the range of services offered. The sense of solidarity in the room was strong, emphasized by stories of resilience shared by families like Andrew Pitcairn’s, whose daughter received nurturing care at George Mark. “This organization shines as a beacon in moments of adversity,” the former board member said. “The courage and love demonstrated here inspire us to give back and pay it forward.”
A celebration highlight came with San Francisco’s Chief of Protocol, Maryam Muduroglu, who presented a City Proclamation in honor of Dr. Hull and the House’s invaluable contributions. Adding to this recognition, Betty Yu read a congressional commendation from Representative Eric Swalwell, applauding the organization’s lasting impact on the local community and beyond.
Lending an element of elegance, San Francisco’s House of Azadeh showcased a unique collaboration by dressing Dr. Hull and Mrs. Eliassen in exquisite evening couture. Beyond aesthetics, this partnership became a symbol of philanthropy, as the fashion house contributed a custom-designed package that significantly bolstered the night’s fundraising efforts.

From start to finish, the gala was a symphony of gratitude, remembrance, and ambition for the future. On this milestone occasion, George Mark Children’s House reaffirmed its promise to remain a sanctuary of compassion for families facing profound challenges.
The celebration was about looking back and moving forward with renewed purpose, deepening the commitment to a vision that transforms lives, one family at a time.
