Hummingbird Awards Take Flight in Their Second Year

At George Mark Children’s House, we believe in pausing to honor the people who help make this place so meaningful. That’s why we created the Hummingbird Awards, now in their second year. These awards were established to recognize individuals, organizations, and partners whose steady commitment and heartfelt contributions quietly move the mission forward and bring lasting comfort to the children and families we serve.

A Symbol of Hope and Healing

Hummingbirds hold a special place in the hearts of our patients, families, and staff. These tiny fliers seem to appear just when we need them most — hovering gently, flickering through the garden, or pausing outside a window. They have become a symbol of healing, comfort, and hope to many of us here at George Mark. Their presence brings reassurance — especially during difficult times.

These beautiful birds have become part of the daily rhythm of life at George Mark. That’s why we created the Hummingbird Awards — to recognize the people and partners who embody those same life-affirming qualities. We introduced these awards last year at our 20th anniversary celebration. We honored twelve recipients in that first year, an inspiring mix of corporate, community, and individual partners who have made a significant impact on the George Mark mission.

The award itself is also deeply special. The Hummingbird Award trophy was lovingly designed and gifted to George Mark by Bob Pauley and Jerome Ranft, renowned artists from Pixar Animation Studios. Their talent and generosity brought the hummingbird symbol to life in a way that beautifully captures the heart of our mission. Bob and Jerome were also among the inaugural Hummingbird Award recipients.

Honoring This Year’s Recipients

We were proud to continue the tradition this spring by recognizing several outstanding Hummingbird Award 2025 recipients.

Amador Valley High School

The very first Hummingbird Award of the year went to Amador Valley High School, whose unwavering support of George Mark spans more than a decade. Their student-led Mr. Amador Show fundraiser, celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, is a fun and spirited annual event that has raised over $500,000 for George Mark in the past 14 years.

Their commitment reminds us that when young people come together for a cause they believe in, they’re capable of creating something far bigger than themselves. Such and impressive feat!

Country Wine Zoological

We also recognized Wine Country Zoological (formerly known as Safari Encounters), a longtime favorite in our Child Life programming. Over the years, they’ve brought a delightful parade of animal ambassadors to George Mark: capybaras, boas, a baby joey, small alligators, and more!

Every visit sparks curiosity, laughter, and connection, and provides patients and families a chance to share in something unexpected and joyful.

Even more incredible? They do this entirely for free, driven purely by heart and a deep commitment to bringing comfort through creature encounters.

Recognizing Volunteer Impact: Sherrill Sleeter

We also had the joy of honoring Sherrill Sleeter, one of our longtime volunteers who has become a familiar and beloved presence at George Mark. Sherrill has been a consistent weekly volunteer since May 2019, bringing great empathy, joy, and playfulness to our patients. Her thoughtful approach and warm demeanor have made her a favorite among both families and staff.

Beyond her weekly presence, Sherrill has also served as the lead volunteer at many of our events. In this role, she provides invaluable support and helps to create meaningful experiences for everyone involved. Whether she’s welcoming guests at Family Picnic or guiding a child through an activity during Pumpkin Day, Sherrill brings care and intention to every interaction.

Sherill is the first volunteer to receive a Hummingbird Award, and we see her as the beginning of what will be a growing and heartfelt tradition. There are so many others like Sherrill — people who give generously and consistently and who quietly help create the special atmosphere that defines George Mark. We look forward to honoring more volunteers in the years ahead.

Continuing the Tradition

Although the Hummingbird Awards are a relatively new introduction at George Mark, they already feel like something timeless, something we will carry forward with gratitude and intention. They give us a way to pause, to recognize, and to say thank you.

Every award recipient tells a George Mark story in their own way.

Each hummingbird honored reminds us that our work is never done alone.

As we look to the months ahead, we remain committed to honoring the people and partners who make a difference at George Mark.

The Hummingbird Awards will continue to grow — just like the gardens they’re named for.
